Hi Marc - Thank you for your comment! Taking the long view, I believe is truly important and inspiring - and a way to shape our destiny. If we get too focused on the material or on personal achievements, we lose sight of how we are all connected, and we forget that our futures are all bound together. Stay well and thank you so much for reading my blog! Maggie

I ran in to a startling quote recently that was written by Blaise Pascal in the 1600's: "All the unhappiness of man arises from one single fact, that they cannot sit quietly in their own room." Imagine what he would say about our technological society today! This is a thoughtful article that needs to be passed on to parents that are swimming upstream seeking to instill and encourage creativity and play in to their childrens's lives! Thank you!

Maggie, your article is extremely interesting and points out the right question : at some time, how can a person provide more meaning to its destiny ? Especially, how to keep feeling fine among so many diverse conditions around - poverty, loneliness, mental disorder, etc. - and how to provide or what to provide which can bring a satisfactory relief to the so many broken people that stand next door ? I have no clear answer for myself, other than being "active" as long as possible, and "transmitting" as much as possible : as if, at 57, I was convinced that in reality "my" future is "our children's" future, "their" future.
Congratulation for your blog. Amicalement, Marc

Yes, great article. It does raise the question, how do we advise our children? Do we steer them toward lucrative careers and greater financial stability, advising them that there will be time to privilege meaning and social impact? I've spent my career in nonprofits that have a mission I believe in, and I'm hard pressed to think what my encore career would be.

Great article, Maggie. I think your description of smart phones is perfect: "the smart phone is our teddy bear and cognitive prosthetic" It made me think of my son and his teddy bear. I hope that bear is never replaced by a smart phone.

Wonderful post! So often we as parents fail to set boundaries for our kids because of the time it takes to establish, articulate, and consistently reinforce our position. That seems not unrelated to another major influence on how much self-control our kids develop over their social media use - the example they see in us of being overly distracted (or not) by technology. The deliberate approach needed to effectively parent can be supported or undermined by our own levels of prioritization and self-control.
